What Online Counselling Sessions Are Like

Each session is a quiet, steady space where you can talk about whatever feels important. We move at your pace, paying attention to what feels manageable and safe. Some weeks you may come with something specific you want to explore; other weeks we might simply notice what’s happening for you in the moment.

My approach is person‑centred and relational, which means I’m alongside you rather than directing you. I listen closely, reflect gently, and help you make sense of your thoughts, feelings and experiences. There’s no pressure to be a certain way or to talk about anything before you’re ready.

Over time, sessions often become a place where you can slow down, notice yourself more clearly, and begin to understand what you need.

First Session

The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and see whether working together feels right. There’s no expectation to share everything at once — many people start by talking about what brought them here, what they’re hoping for, or what life has been like recently.

I’ll ask a few gentle questions to help me understand your situation and to make sure I can offer the support you need. You’re welcome to ask me anything about how I work, what to expect, or any worries you might have.

By the end of the session, we’ll have a sense of whether we’re a good fit and whether you’d like to continue. There’s no obligation to decide straight away.

You can find out about my fees on my fees page or send my a message from my contact page.

Working Online

All sessions take place online using a secure video platform. Many people find that working online offers a sense of comfort and flexibility — you can talk from a space that feels familiar and private, without the travel or time pressure of in‑person appointments.

Online counselling can be just as relational and meaningful as meeting face‑to‑face. We still see each other, hear each other, and pay attention to the subtle shifts in tone, expression and emotion that shape the therapeutic relationship.

To get the most from online sessions, it helps to choose a quiet, private space where you won’t be interrupted. A pair of headphones can also make the experience feel more contained.

Boundaries & Communication

As an online counsellor, I aim to offer a space that feels safe, consistent, and respectful. Clear boundaries help us both know what to expect and support the therapeutic work.

  • Contact between sessions - I’m not available for ongoing support outside of our agreed session times. You’re welcome to contact me to arrange, change, or cancel appointments, but I’m not able to offer therapeutic conversations by email, text, or phone between sessions.

  • Response times - I’ll reply to messages about scheduling as soon as I can, usually within two working days. I don’t check messages in the evenings or at weekends.

  • Session times and punctuality - Sessions start and end at the agreed time. If you arrive late, we’ll still finish at the usual time so that the boundary of the session remains consistent.

  • Cancellations - If you need to cancel or reschedule, please let me know as soon as possible. My full cancellation policy is available in your welcome pack.

  • Crisis support - I’m not able to offer crisis or emergency support. If you feel at risk or need urgent help, please contact your GP, NHS 111, or emergency services.

These boundaries aren not about distance — they’re about creating a reliable, safe container for the work we do together.
